Overview

The Town of Patterson participates in Single Stream Recycling.

What is Single Stream Recycling? Single Stream recycling means that all recycling commodities (newspaper, paperboard, corrugated fiberboard, plastic, and glass) are all mixed together. They are then separated at the recycling facility.

Have questions? Email refuse@pattersonny.org or call 845-878-4341.

Other Ways to Recycle Unwanted Items

Plastic Bags, Plastic Film, Bubble Wrap:

A consortium of retail stores and manufacturers maintain dropoff centers for plastic bags, plastic film, bubble wrap, and other types of retail plastic packaging not accepted by Patterson Recycling. Please visit www.plasticfilmrecycling.org for a list of dropoff sites and items accepted. The Putnam County Health Dept. has also compiled a list of dropoff sites within the County. There is no charge for using these sites.

Building Materials, Electrical, and Hardware:

Habitat for Humanity operates Restore in nearby Danbury, CT. ReStore is a home building supply thrift store that recycles new, gently used and antique items donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals. The donations are sold to the public at very low prices or used in the construction of Habitat houses. ReStore may be able to take your leftover building supplies from remodelling projects, old but usable kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures, furniture, lighting fixtures, and similar items. Please contact ReStore directly to discuss any items that you might like to donate. Donations may be tax deductible.

Household goods, Furniture, TVs, Computers, Tools, etc.:

Putnam County Freecycle is the local chapter of a nationwide network of groups dedicated to giving away and receiving items that are no longer needed but still usable. The Putnam chapter has an active membership and its main rule is that the donated item be usable, given away freely, and described accurately. It's a grassroots and nonprofit effort dedicated to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. Membership is open to anyone and is free but does require a Yahoo logon.

Compost Vegetable Food Scraps and Yard Waste:

Kitchen food scraps (no meats or fish) and yard waste can be composted to create a valuable and natural garden fertilizer. The process is easy. Visit the Putnam County Cooperative Extension website for more informaton.

Miscellaneous:

Many area churches, charitable groups, and other organizations, such as the Putnam Humane Society, operate thrift stores to support their causes and will be happy to accept clean and usable items that you no longer need. Many donations qualify for a tax deduction.

Odd Materials and What To Do With Them

The NYS DEC has a handy guide on how to dispose of many items.

Used Needles: Please consult the NYS Safe Sharps Collection Program .

Ammunition can be brought to the State Police Barracks at 1672 Route 22, Brewster, NY.

The Patterson Recycling Center

An annual permit is required to use the facility. Permit fees are $30 for the first permit or $10 for the second permit. A commercial recycling permit costs $200.00. The fees are used to defray the cost of operating the Center.

Town residents may purchase a permit at Town Hall or by mail. The Center is open only to Patterson residents.

Special permits are required for some items as noted.

ITEMS THAT CAN BE BROUGHT TO THE CENTER ARE:
Any material accepted for curbside recycling

Bulk Items: air conditioners, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers / dryers, water heaters etc., sofas, old furniture, mattresses

additional cost for all appliances, stuffed furniture, and everything with a cord

E-waste may be brought to the Recycling Center. Examples of e-waste include computers and peripherals, TVs and remotes, telephones and cell phones, and CD/DVD and tape players.

To protect your privacy, be sure to erase the data on your hard drives or remove it from the computer and dispose of it with your trash after removing the circuit board which can be recycled
