The Patterson Environmental Park

The Patterson Environmental Park is a 23-acre town-owned nature preserve situated in the Great Swamp, the second largest wetlands area in New York State. The park is situated on the remains of an old stone quarry and railroad bed. The foundations for many of the homes in Patterson are believed to have been quarried here, and transported to the hamlet on railroad cars. The remains of several stone blocks cut from the quarry can be seen along the access path. The park offers hiking, fishing, canoeing, cross-country skiing. The entrance to the park is on South St. across from the old One Room Schoolhouse, which is on the grounds of the Carmel Central School District offices.

Caution: The entrance to the park crosses over active Metro North Railroad tracks. Be observant!
